Better healthcare

Free healthcare, when and where you need it.

When you or someone you love is sick, there’s nothing more important than getting the very best care, close to home.

That’s why ACT Labor’s making the biggest investments in free public healthcare in the Territory’s history. We’re opening the Canberra Hospital Expansion, building the new Northside Hospital, and expanding services at our Walk-in Centres.

To make sure that Canberrans get the right care, at the right place and at the right time – we will hire more nurses, more doctors and more specialists to provide free healthcare right across Canberra.

Because only Labor invests in our healthcare system. And only Labor looks after those who work in it, and the Canberrans who rely on it.

More nurses, midwives and healthcare workers

We're providing more support for our future nurses, midwives and allied health workers.

As our health system continues to grow, we have a plan to ensure the workforce grows with it.  So that Canberrans can get the care they need, when and where they need it – a re-elected Labor Government will hire 800 more health workers.

It’ll mean more nurses, doctors, specialists and other health workers providing free healthcare right across Canberra. Last election, we promised to hire 400 additional healthcare workers - we’ve funded nearly 600 and recruit more every week.

New northside hospital

Canberra’s north is continuing to grow, and ACT Labor will keep building the hospitals and health centres to cater for this growing demand.

Combined with the Canberra Hospital Expansion, we are now planning for a new northside hospital.

A Labor Government will ensure that we can continue to provide better healthcare – where and when Canberrans need it.

A bigger and better Canberra Hospital

We’re building a bigger and better Canberra Hospital – with a new emergency department, larger ICU and more operating theatres.

Opening this year, it will have modern equipment and better facilities for staff, patients and visitors.

We’re also boosting our workforce to meet the growing needs of our community.

ACT Labor will always invest in our public healthcare – so you can access the right healthcare, when and where you need it.

Free healthcare at Walk-In Centres

ACT Labor believes in free public healthcare for every Canberran - we always have and we always will.

We promised a free nurse-led walk-in clinic in every region of Canberra and we delivered.

Labor’s network of Walk-in Centres offer free healthcare for illnesses and injuries – every day of the year. And under Labor, Walk-in Centres will always be free–you’ll never have to pay a cent.

By hiring more nurses and delivering more health services, Canberrans will get the healthcare they need, at the right place and at the right time.

We know the Liberals wanted to scrap Walk-in Centres when Labor first built them – and we know whenever the Liberals get the chance, the first thing they cut is health.
