Jobs and skills

More secure local jobs

We know how important a good, secure job is to you. That’s why Labor has always worked hard to create and protect Canberra jobs.

In 2020, we promised to create 250,000 local jobs by 2025. And that’s exactly what we did, and we reached that target early.

But we won’t stop there. Under Labor, Canberra will always be a place where you can get a good, secure job. Not only are we working on a new plan to create 300,000 local jobs by 2030, we are also making sure all Canberrans get good conditions and good pay, no matter where they work.

Investing in skills

The ACT Government is supporting a strong and skilled workforce for Canberra’s future by signing up to the National Skills Agreement.

We are working with our Federal Labor Government to deliver thousands more Fee Free TAFE places. The Program rolled out across our CIT makes it cheaper to study, helps more Canberrans to get good, secure jobs, and makes the decision to retrain so much easier. Our support for the Fee-Free TAFE program has already seen more than 2500 Canberrans gain new skills and retrain for free.

More nurses, midwives and healthcare workers

As our health system continues to grow, we have a plan to ensure the workforce grows with it.

This includes providing more support for nursing, midwifery and allied health students - to help them through their studies and encourage them to stay in the ACT.

We're providing more support for our future nurses, midwives and allied health workers.

Being on clinical placement is a key part of learning. But we know it can cause financial stress and worry as students often need to take time off work or reduce their shifts.

That's why we're providing financial support to students through their placements - so they can focus on gaining the experience they need to help our community. We’ve already helped hundreds of students.

We’re also providing more scholarships and assistance for health workers at different points in their career, so they can continue to upskill and access extra training and study.

Keeping public jobs public

We know that a secure, well-paid job is about more than putting food on the table or paying the rent or mortgage. It provides meaning, structure, connection and opportunity in people’s lives.

After having reached our target 250,000 local jobs earlier than we promised, we are aiming bigger. 300,000 secure local jobs by 2030.

As our city grows, we will employ more people to deliver the public services that Canberrans need, we will:

  • employ more teachers
  • employ more nurses and allied health professionals
  • employ more transport drivers
  • employ more city rangers to keep our city tidy
  • keep the Canberra Institute of Technology in public hands; and
  • keep public transport in public hands.

More support for teachers

As Canberra continues to grow, ACT Labor has ensured that our public education system grows with it.

In 2020, we committed to hiring more than 400 teachers and support staff for ACT public schools and we have done that and more.

Teachers are the single most important factor to secure good educational outcomes for students.

ACT Teacher Scholarships program, is an initiative of the ACT Government to provide ACT public school teachers and school leaders with financial support to undertake further education, training and research.
