Chief Minister at a Canberra housing project

MORE HOMES FOR CANBERRA

We're improving housing access, affordability and choice.

ACT Labor has an ambitious plan to provide more housing for Canberrans, where they want to live.

We know that Canberrans want more homes to buy and rent, and they want to see the Government building more homes for people who can’t afford it. Labor has a practical plan to get it done.

As more and more people choose to call our city home, Labor will continue to deliver the housing Canberrans will need well into the future.

More public housing

Labor has a proven track record when it comes to building more and better public housing.

The ACT currently has double the national average of public housing - one of the highest levels of public housing per capita in Australia. This is an achievement to be proud of, and that’s come from more than 20 years of continuous Labor Governments that value the importance of safe and secure housing.

But there’s more to do. That’s why we’ve got hundreds of new public homes currently in the construction pipeline and it’s why we’ve committed record investment to public housing maintenance and upgrades.

Protecting renters' rights

ACT Labor continues to lead the way on protecting and improving renters’ rights. From no-fault eviction protections, minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties, stopping excessive rent increases, and making sure furry friends can be renters too - we will always stand up for renters’ rights.

Delivering on the National Housing Accord

Housing affordability is a national problem, and the ACT Government is a strong supporter of the Albanese Government’s ambition to build one million homes.

As a signatory to the National Housing Accord, we are working closely with the Commonwealth Government to build more housing for more Canberrans.

Cutting stamp duty

We are continuing to make it easier for Canberrans to buy a home.

Nearly two decades ago, ACT Labor began a nation leading tax reform program to make our system fairer and reduce the costs of buying a home in the ACT.

We are making it easier for home buyers to get into the market by cutting stamp duty year after year. Stamp duty can be a significant barrier to home ownership.

More housing choice

ACT Labor has proven that we have a vision for our city and the ability to deliver on it.

We are making it easier to build new homes closer to services, workplaces and community facilities - offering Canberrans more choice in where and how they want to live.

This includes more housing choice for Canberrans - from apartments, duplexes, townhouses and free standing homes to make sure there’s something for everyone.

And we are also finding innovative ways to increase rental opportunities in the nation’s capital. Build-to-rent is a housing model that delivers new, long-term and stable private rental homes for Canberrans.

And our $60 million Affordable Housing Project Fund is supporting hundreds of additional affordable rental homes in Canberra.
