Labor to prioritise hospital infrastructure for Canberra’s future
Labor will continue to prioritise construction of new hospital infrastructure for our growing population. This includes the construction of a new northside hospital in Belconnen and more public transport connections and car parking for our major hospitals.
Labor is the only party to commit to a new public hospital in Canberra’s north. It’s a critical project that will support healthcare in our city for decades to come, and that’s why we will start construction on the project in the next term.
We are prioritising this project to ensure every Canberran has access to the right healthcare, in the right place and at the right time.
The new Northside Hospital in Belconnen will include a bigger Emergency Department, a bigger ICU and more operating theatres.
To support our growing health workforce and deliver the best care to patients, the new Northside Hospital will include the latest medical technology and equipment.
Building on the successful consultation model for the Canberra Hospital expansion we will continue to work closely with health workers, consumers and carers to deliver a hospital that is fit-for-purpose.
Having recently completed the Critical Services Building, a re-elected Labor Government will also continue to upgrade and improve the Canberra Hospital campus in Woden.
The next stage of upgrades will be a new, multi‑storey carpark on Yamba Drive to make it easier for staff, patients and visitors.
We will explore options to work with non-government partners to deliver the new car park for the Hospital, with construction expected to start in the next term.
We will also upgrade the Yamba Drive entry, open a new acute palliative care ward and expand endoscopy services.
Labor will always invest in our public healthcare system. We will hire 800 more health workers, expand services at our Walk-in Centres and deliver more health services across the ACT.
It is all part of our progressive, practical and proven plan for Canberra.
