More families to benefit from Labor’s meals in schools program

We believe that every Canberra student should be given the best opportunity to benefit from their education.

That’s why Labor piloted a new program provide meals to students in ACT public schools, recognising that kids perform better at school with a full stomach.

It’s practical, proven policy to support families, and a re-elected Labor Government will expand the free meals in schools program to 20 public schools across the city.

Over 8,300 students at the participating public schools will have access to a free breakfast and lunch three days a week.

ACT public schools will be prioritised for the program expansion according to need. The expansion will commence at the end of the current pilot in the middle of 2025, with an extra 5 schools added each year.

The meals are designed by a nutrition specialist, with dietary needs accommodated for all students.

The $32 million expansion of the program will not only help thousands of public school students with their education, but it will save Canberra families on their grocery bills.

It is all part of our progressive, practical and proven plan for Canberra.
