ACT lockdown extended to 2 September

Given the rising case numbers in the ACT, the lockdown response in the ACT will be extended beyond this week for a further two weeks until Thursday 2 September.

Clearly, COVID-19 is active in our community.

With case numbers rising, there are now thousands of close contacts and a growing list of exposure sites.

This is the most serious situation the ACT has faced throughout this pandemic.

Lockdowns are a proven measure to keep people safe and to slow the spread of the virus.

Lockdowns drastically limit movement and exposure opportunities, and they are critical to our ability to understand how far the virus has spread during this initial period of the outbreak.

We will continue to access the situation every day, and if we can end the lockdown earlier, we will.

The ACT Government is finalising arrangements for this lockdown extension over the next 24 hours.

Our key message will stay the same - stay at home.

The virus will only spread if we allow it.

If you have to leave the home to get tested or to get essential items, be careful.

We understand that lockdowns are difficult for families, for friends, for businesses and for community groups.

The Government will continue to consider ways that we can ensure support is available to those that really need it.

The ACT Government is also in discussions with the Commonwealth Government to extend financial support mechanisms for individuals and local businesses who are significantly impacted by public health measures.
